Why is honey beneficial for my diet?
Honey is a natural sweetener rich in vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that act like a shield for our immune system.
It prevails in comparison to white sugar, since, even though sugars can be found in both, honey is rich in many nutrients not found in white sugar.
- Rich in antioxidants
The less the processing of honey, the more antioxidants can be found in it. Antioxidants play a huge role in the prevention of oxidative stress, which causes early aging, diabetes and other diseases. Honey also contains vitamins of the B complex, vitamin C, iron, calcium, potassium and sodium.
- Replaces sugar
While sucrose can be found in both granulated sugar and honey, honey is proven to be far more beneficial to us, since it can help prevent Type II Diabetes and metabolic syndrome, due to the antioxidants and other nutrients in it. Even though it is better than granulated sugar, especially in diabetic people, it should be consumed in moderation. It is also important to note that some companies like to dilute their honey with glucose syrup, so the type of honey you choose to buy must be chosen carefully.
- Benefits cardiovascular health
According to studies, honey can help lower blood pressure, heart rate and improve fat levels in blood, contributing in prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
- As a burn and wound treatment
Since the ancient days, honey was used as a topical treatment for wounds and burns. Hippocrates praised honey for its healing abilities in numerous situations, that are a result of its antinflamation and antibacterial properties. It also helps with easing the pain of a sore throat and coughing.
- Cosmetic ingredient
Honey can be used by itselff, or as an ingredient in creams and other cosmetics for the face, body and hair. It is usually used to target acne and dry skin due to its hydrating properties that help the skin maintain its moisture.
It should not be consumed by kids under the age of 1 due to the danger of being infected by Clostridium Botulinum.
